Haircare Routine: Shampoo

Recommended Shampoos

Since my John Frieda Luxurious Volume post, I've wanted to bring more haircare to the blog. A lot of you will know that I've been an Aussie Angel for a long time now (lucky me!) and the bulk of my routine products are made by Aussie, but a few others do sneak in there too. I figured the basics are a good place to start so these are the 4 shampoos I currently have on rotation. I know it may seem weird to have more than one on the go, but I find that after I use one product for a while it starts to lose its effect, so it helps to rotate. Also, different products have different effects right? So I use the applicable one to how I'll be styling my hair that day. Not rocket science, I'm sure you'll agree!

#1 John Frieda Full Repair I received this c/o John Frieda a few weeks back and have been trialling since then. I generally avoid moisturising shampoos because I worry they'll weigh down my fine hair. My hair is a bit split personality because although it's fine but it's pretty fuzzy too, but I find that sticking to styling products and occasional treatments to help works better for me and stops me free-falling the other way into limp and greasedom.

If I used this shampoo everyday I think my hair wouldn't style as well or be as bouncy as I'd like because it's simply too moisturising for me, but if I stick to twice a week it makes it feel very soft as well as seemingly undoing the bad stuff that styling and heat inflict on it. It doesn't smell of much but it lathers quickly and you don't need much so a tube will last a good while. The price is obviously pretty good too, you can pick it up for £5.69 at Boots and often it's on 3 for 2.

Recommended Shampoos

#2 TIGI Bed Head Foxy Curls I love TIGI shampoos. This is the 4th one I've tried and strictly the only curl shampoo I've had in my collection for a long time. I got this one and the matching conditioner for £9.99 each at my local TK Maxx but obviously you all probably know that you can get them in a lot of places for good prices online like Feel Unique and Look Fantastic.

Foxy Curls smells like refresher bars (you know, the chewy yellow sweets in the blue wrappers) which can sometimes be a bit overwhelming first thing in the morning but if you like sweet smells like Lush's Snow Fairy then you'll love it. The 750ml bottle with the pump top means the it stands sturdy in the shower and it's easy to get out a necessary amount. Although I can see these lasting ages because of the size of the bottle, I find I do need more than usual to get my hair in a good lather. Most importantly though, I've noticed a real change in the amount my hair curls without using a diffuser since I started using this. My hair has grown out loads and the layers have pretty much gone, which leaves it a little flatter than usual. Since I started using this I've noticed not only more curl but also more volume without having to use any other products.

#3 Aussie Mega Shampoo The Mega Shampoo is something I've always bypassed when I see it on the shelves. I want my shampoo to do something, curl, defrizz or volumise generally. To the untrained eye, well, this guy doesn't do anything. WRONG. What I've noticed most about this shampoo is the really clean finish it leaves. I use a lot of products on my hair and this can sometimes lead to a sticky build-up every so often. I use the Mega Shampoo probably once to twice a week to really clean my hair and strip everything that's built up from it but without damaging it. As always with Aussie, it smells delicious and leaves a gorgeous shine. I always feel ultra fresh when I use this.

#4 Aussie Frizz Miracle Ah, old friend, how loyal you are. I have been using this shampoo for literally years. Too many to count. Long before I became an Aussie Angel and long before I cut off most of my hair this bad boy stood in my shower. The formula is a little thicker than normal and it has Australian Blue Gum in it which means it actually comes out of the bottle blue, which I love. It smells totally delicious and I've found that the scent stays on your hair too, perhaps more than with the TIGI shampoo. This shampoo really is the best I've tried for defrizzing. When I use this my hair dries easily and appears so much sleeker than usual but without sacrificing the natural shape of my hair. My hair doesn't just hang limp like with other shampoos I've tried for dry and damaged hair but keeps its shape and volume without the fuzz! Score. You can pick up all Aussie shampoos from Boots for £4.49 - total barg.

Wonder Products: Lips

Wonder Products: Lips

I'm picky when it comes to lip products. I have really dry lips that chap easily, so I need a seriously moisturising product that lasts a while without needing constant application. Because I wear lipstick daily, I need my lips to be smooth or it looks gross and I feel super self conscious about the whole affair. I've spent the last few years switching between pots of Carmex and random samples I've picked up in the hope they might tick the right boxes.

Three months ago I discovered First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lip Therapy. I bought it by chance on a look around Boots. Although at £9 a tube it may seem a bit of a risky gamble, the tube is a decent size (14.8ml) and I'd received some First Aid Beauty samples in a Glossybox and liked them. I was desperate to find something that worked so I thought I'd give it a go.

Wonder Products: Lips

This balm is a perfect texture. Texture is my number one gripe when it comes to lip products - I like them best when they're thick and don't leave too much of a sheen on my lips as I like to wear them on top of lipstick if necessary. The First Aid Beauty balm is thick and opaque, not entirely clear, but applied properly that doesn't seem to have an effect on how it looks. Once I applied it I could feel it start to sink instantly and the mint flavour meant it felt cool and soothing. Although I could feel it working it didn't feel heavy at all and most importantly it wasn't sticky. I hate it when lip balms are sticky! Personally I like the minty fresh taste and smell. It's fresh and not too overwhelming. One tube lasted me nearly two months with regular application and I repurchased straight away.

Next I found the aptly named Dainty Doll Wonderbalm. If you're a long time reader you'll know that I love Nicola Roberts and that I've tried out a few Dainty Doll products before. I'd been eyeing up Wonderbalm for literally months but at £20.50 I was never brave enough to buy so after a particularly horrid hospital procedure last month I decided I'd treat myself.

The great thing about Wonderbalm is that its not just a lip product. It can be used on hands, heels, elbows or any dry skin so I knew I'd get decent use out of it. It comes in a cute pot of a substantial size with a mirror in the lid to help with application. It has a honey-like scent and taste neither of which particularly strong, I don't usually like sweet flavours but I find it perfectly fine. It's much thinner than the First Aid Beauty product and applies with a much glossier finish. Though I thought these were both down points for me, I still like it as much as the First Aid Beauty balm because it feels good on application. It's super moisturising and long lasting and even now I still feel like I can feel it doing its work. I'm about a third of the way through the pot having bought it about 4 weeks ago, but I have applied it to my hands as well where it works as well as any hand cream I've used. I fully intend to repurchase even though it's expensive, purely because it is such a useful, multifunctional product that has a rich, moisturising effect I haven't found in other balms.

So, there they are, my two wonder products for lips. You can snap them both up from your local Boots store, or online with Boots or Feel Unique. What is your go-to lip product? Is there one you swear by or do you chop and change?

John Frieda Luxurious Volume

John Frieda Luxurious Volume

I am yet to find my holy grail of hair products. Styling products are often difficult to choose between since I have both a natural curl to my hair and with it being quite fine in texture, I end up piling a lot on which serves to only weigh it down. I find products that work, but usually within a few months to a year they seem to stop having the same effect they once did. I get fed up and start looking again. Ho hum.

I have to say, that is the experience I have had with John Frieda products before. I used Frizz Ease somewhat religiously in my teens (when my hair was a bit thicker and hence, more fuzzy), in particular, the Dream Curls product. But when I hit young adulthood, and especially when I started reading more blogs about beauty and hair, I started to experiment. Lately I've found myself contemplating a Dream Curls purchase in Boots more than once, so it was a joy when John Frieda got in touch with me to review some products for them. As I said, my hair is super fine, and when it's getting a little long the way it is now, it's almost impossible to style upwards rather than out. I have plenty of body at the sides by the roots often lie flat and need a lot of teasing to go against their will. I was using a Wella Curl Mousse, an Aussie spray and a Label.M Souffle to style my hair when the John Frieda products arrived. I have since used them for around 4 weeks - these are my thoughts:

Luxurious Volume Thickening Mousse: I apply a palm sized ball of this to the roots of my hair and work down into the mid lengths to tip. Like I said I've been using every 2 or 3 days for around 4 weeks and I think I have about half of this bottle left. It doesn't smell of much, isn't sticky and is incredibly light, which is a difference I noticed from my normal curl mousse - or the Aussie mousse I also use. Using this alone, with no other products gives good initial root lift, but obviously not much lasting hold. I would say there is no significant change in curl in my hair now that I'm using a volumising mousse not a curl defining one, but it is bigger, at least post-wash. After use there is no crunch to my hair, no stickiness and my hair feels fresh, springy and clean. My overall thoughts on this mousse as a stand-alone product is that it is good, but not stand-out. If you're a mousse user, there's a high chance it's a good step up from the mousse you use now, particularly because it has a heat protector in it, but it won't transform you into a state of Cheryl Cole-esque flowing locks.

John Frieda Luxurious Volume

Luxurious Volume Thickening Blow Dry Lotion: I'm not entirely sure what a blow dry lotion is. The word lotion has very negative connotations for me: on my skin it barely skims the surface, on my hair it weighs it down. I was dubious. John Frieda tells me that this blow dry lotion "Thickens and lifts from the roots for high rise style". Wahey, let's go. I was told that after towel drying I should spray onto my hair, concentrating on my roots and ensure that the undersection and surface was covered. I did this and dried my hair as usual (half no nozzle, half diffuser). Used on it's own it created brilliant lift at the root. It also, on me (though it makes no claim to do this), added a lovely shine to my root area without weighing it down or causing an unpleasant feel. Again, like the mousse, it was so light it was barely there, but it was definitely pumping up my hair. Win. It also offers some heat protection which is a nice extra.

Luxurious Volume Thickening Hairspray: I am well and truly an Aussie Angel when it comes to hairspray. Nothing worked for me until I met the wonder that is the Aussie Volume and Gloss Hairspray which has transformed my hair into a gravity defying masterpiece at many an Angel get together (check my pic up in the sidebar for evidence). This spray had a lot to live up to and did it? Well... no. In fact, it failed quite spectacularly. It doesn't smell particularly good, it holds hair but not for long enough and it left my curls rigid and crispy. I didn't like it and it's the only product I didn't use for the whole 4 weeks. I dropped it after 2 and I'm safely back in Aussie hands.

So, I'm currently still using both the Luxurious Volume Thickening Blow Dry Lotion and the Thickening Mousse. I use them in conjunction with Aussie Mega Shampoo and Take the Heat 3 Minute Miracle, plus Label.M Souffle (for texture and curl definition) and occasionally Paul Mitchell Express Round Trip which I got in a Glossybox. The mousse is something I can probably take or leave, although if I'm looking for height in the future it will be something I'll repurchase, especially because for the price it really is pretty great value. The Blow Dry Lotion though is something I really like and am planning to repurchase. I have a lot of problems with products making my (naturally dry and flyaway) hair greasy and flat on days 2 and 3 and this lotion adds height with little to no side effects. I really like it.

All 3 of these products retail for £5.79 on the Boots website. At the moment they're on a 2 for £7.50 promotion. I'm told that a new collection for John Frieda has just hit the shelves too, this time called "Full Repair" - aimed at hair that needs a bit of a pick me up. Click this link to watch a video.
