I was taking photos for an upcoming post on my latest Mac purchase, Cut a Caper lipstick from the Heavenly Creatures collection, when I realised I had never posted about a Mac lipstick before. You’ll know if you’ve been reading for a while that I bloody love a lipstick, I wear one on a day to day basis and the majority of those I own (and by far my favourites) are of the Mac variety.
This is Rebel and out of the 8ish Mac lipsticks I own, it is my favourite and most used. It’s described on the Mac website as “Vivid Pinkish-Purple”. I’d agree with that but I’d be tempted to call it a “berry” because on me it definitely appears more purple side of things as opposed to fuchsia. It’s pretty deep, so if you generally go subtle and wear a lot of soft pinks or corals than it’s probably not for you unless you want to make a serious statement. I love a strong lip with simple eyes so I’ve found myself using this over and over again.
I was partly inspired to write this post because I really loved the gorgeous Nat’s post on her favourite Mac lipsticks. Like her, a lot of MUAs warned me against buying Rebel because of my pale skin, saying I’d “look like a goth” (a good thing in my books) It’s not a shade I’ve seen featured on beauty blogs or YouTube a lot so I hadn’t come across it before I spied it in-store. After I swatched it a few times, I decided I’d try it anyway and I’m really happy I did. Having said that, this is definitely a colour that would look fantastic on darker or olive skin tones.
I think the main reason it works for me is, because of the pink undertones in my skin, and the occasional outburst of eczema that I suffer with, I find that it’s a great alterative to a classic red lip. Reds can often be unflattering on me if I’m mid flare up and can make me look like a huge red, angry face (official term). The berry tones of Rebel seem to down-play the redness in my skin but it still provides a very dramatic look. I like a colour on my lips, I’m really not one for a nude or baby pink, so it’s no surprise that I’m nearly at the bottom of my 2nd tube of this.
I don’t know a lot about Mac lipstick finishes except for that I tend to gravitate towards Satins or Amplifieds. This is a Satin so it slicks on beautifully, feels pretty moisturising and doesn’t dry my lips out. It skims dry patches easily and lasts for a good 4 hour stint as long as you don’t chow down on a huge meal or do some serious snogging. It’s still very pigmented and provides a very opaque, glossy finish without the need to build it up too much. It is buildable though, should you want to play it down or make a bigger impact. It also fades evenly, which is a big plus.
Because of the moisture factor I don’t find that this gives my lips that scaly look you can get with lipstick if your lips aren’t in perfect condition. Mac matte formulas are a real problem for me with regard to this, so I avoid them like the plague.
Mac Lipsticks retail on the website and at counters for £14 for a 3g tube.
I hope you guys have enjoyed this post. Like I said, I have around 8 Mac lipsticks I think, so if you’re interested in seeing a close up post of any others than please do let me know in the comments. Do you own any Mac lipsticks? If so, what’s your favourite? If not, which lipstick brand do you prefer?
