We all love a broken boy on a guitar. I’m pretty sure we all love folk bands and quirky girls who play the piano, I know I do at least.
But what about for those other occasions? When you need something upbeat and when all you want is to put on your sequinned hotpants and dance your metaphorical socks off?
Well… I’ve taken the liberty of rounding up my favourite girlie pop albums from recent years, which are perfect to pop on and sing along to while you apply your lipstick.
1. Sophie Ellis-Bextor – Trip the Light Fantastic
People seem to have a problem with Ms Ellis-Bextor, but I have to say that I am quite the fan. At least, in later years, after getting over the initial shock of “Murder on the Dancefloor”. This album is filled with modern glitterball pop. Highlights include “Me & My Imagination”, “Catch U” and “If I Can’t Dance”.

2. The Saturdays – Chasing Lights
The new girl band on the block. Pure, unadulterated pop and totally worth listening to. I was skeptical upon downloading but after a few listens I just couldn’t stop listening. Highlights for me include the title track “Chasing Lights”, the amazing “Up” and “Lies”.

3. Dragonette – Galore
Although not technically girlie pop (only the lead singer is female) this pretty much sounds like it and is full of angry and silly lyrics accompanied by upbeat/electro melodies and beats. One of my favourite albums of the naughties so far, so over played its ridiculous, the whole album is a highlight – but if I had to pick one song I’d pick “Jesus doesn’t love me”. If any of these albums are worth buying or downloading, this is it!

4. Girls Aloud – Tangled Up
I couldn’t round this off without an album from the legendary British girl band Girls Aloud. Queens of the UK chart for many years now, despite originating from a TV talent show this album (not their latest, but the one before that) was a turning point as far as I’m concerned and includes gems such as “Sexy! No, No, No…”, “Call the Shots” and “Can’t Speak French”. If you like your pop a little electronic, this is what you want!
