It was my 24th birthday this weekend, so on saturday night, several of my closest friends from all over the country got together to have a little shindig. I love a costume party - I have no shame in saying this. Each of my years at university has brought with it a themed birthday celebration, ranging from Alice in Wonderland, through to Peter Pan, and ending in this years theme - Super Hero/Comic book!
Here are some pictures:
This is my boyfriend Matt and I right at the start of the night. He was dressed as Clark Kent and I, as Poison Ivy. My eyebrows went down a dream. These costumes were both relatively low cost and easily recognizable. I was conscious of making the theme "Comic Book" because some of my friends are dweebs and it was a possibility that some might come as obscure characters from the 17th edition of the New Avengers or whatever. Luckily, most were easy to identify!
Matt's costume consisted of:
Chinos
Tie
White Shirt
Suit Jacket
Superman tshirt
3D Glasses with the lenses popped out
Reporters notebook
Mine:
Green wetlook vest from Primark
Green shiny leggings from ebay
Fake ivy from ebay
Hair extensions :)
Green card for eyebrows
Red lipstick
Barry M Nail polish
Winner of the costume prize Dave - who came as Roy Lichtenstein complete with his own comic square. Proving that those who think outside (and yet inside) the box - win!
Housemate Tonje in her hand stitched Sally Jupiter get up. Here she is modelling Dave's frame.
Powerpuff Girls
Roy and the Joker
The little known super villain Flying Tiger
Me and Matt, significantly drunker
For your own seamless Super Hero party, may I suggest:
<3 A themed cocktail menu
We had a Wonderwoman, Kryptonite and Marvel, along with a Spiderman shot that was totally deadly. My lovely friend Trav stepped in as mixologist on the night - if you're the birthday girl or boy I suggest you enlist one of these, they're very helpful.
<3 Top Trumps
I spent the night before and the morning of the party drawing out a Top Trumps card for each guest. My hand was sore after 25 I can tell you! I left the portrait space free for guests to draw their own, or find a partner in crime to draw it for them. The name, bio and scores for catergories like strength, speed and intelligence were left blank too and guests were given a total number of points to divide as they wished between those catergories. They then were free to challenge any guest they liked, and if you lost, you drank. A good icebreaker for guests who don't know each other.
<3 Party Food
It's not a party without a Party Ring.
<3 Kryptonite
At Asda I found these little shiny clear stones, the kind you find in bathrooms or around the base of plants. I used these as Kryptonite, and when they popped up around the party the finder had to drink. If one made its way into your cup, you had to down your cocktail. However, the redeeming factor is that after drinking, you got to keep the kryptonite and pass it on to whomever you chose.
<3 Pass the Parcel
Old fashioned fun. Layers alternated between a fun sized chocolate bar, an animal mask or a kryptonite. The winner got a little of everything, along with a plastic shark. As you can probably tell, I went for "random" when theming the prizes.
<3 Treasure Hunt
Matt and I devised a genius three teamed treasure hunt in which every clue was Super Hero themed, for example: "When Ice Man is giving you a beating, go straight to where we turn on the _________" (heating). And then everyone runs to the boiler... get it? Ok, so some of the links were a bit tenuous. However, after a bit of dispute of cheating, Team 1 were victorious and received a bevy of delights including a tiara, wand and a plastic octopus. Victory is sweet.
Failing all these tips, alcohol will pretty much do it.
I had a wonderful weekend and am so grateful to all my loved ones for playing along. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves!
