Outfit 20/02/11 + Lorraine Pascale's Fig Pizza

Hello all! Well here's how I spent my saturday. All headscarved, peter pan collared and french horned up. I must apologise for the poor picture quality, yet again, but I really don't have any idea how to use my camera and it seems to be getting worse and worse. Must sit down and work it out sometime soon.

So, today's garments:
- Peter Pan Collar Dress: Topshop sale
- Tights: H&M
- Headscarf: Vintage
- Horn Necklace: River Island Mens
- Shoes (not shown): Nike Royalty Highs in Leopard Grey <3

I'm loving wearing my hair in a turban lately. I feel pretty 50s in it. With short hair, its often quite difficult to get variety in, so I've been searching for bands, clips and scarves to brighten up my curls. Thanks to some recenet blog posts I've seen about, I've been lusting over some Crown & Glory goodies. Once my finances catch up with me (will they ever?) I think I might drop some ££s on some pretty accessories like the gorgeous Orlaith Headband.

Today was mostly spent wandering around Richmond. I spent a while in Costa under the guise of starting my Crime Fiction essay, but instead I just drank tea, spoke to my sister on the phone and read the Hollywood Issue of Vanity Fair. At 5.30 I met my housemate Tonje and we went to see The Fighter. I do have a penchant for films set in or around the city of Boston, and I do also have a brother in law who used to be a boxer, and I do also like films based on a true story, so obviously IT WAS BRILLIANT. I really did enjoy it a lot and I thought there were some great performances, especially from Christian Bale and Amy Adams. I would really recommend going to see it if you're considering it. Its a really honest story about ambition and family and its got some great dialogue. Plus you get to see Mark Wahlberg with his top off a lot, which couldn't hurt right?

After the film I picked some groceries up from Waitrose. I know, posh right? Thing is, because I've been struggling a little bit recently, I thought I deserved a treat. This morning, after my traditional saturday morning viewing of Saturday Kitchen (James Martin, the hungry girl's crumpet) I caught a bit of Lorraine Pascale's Baking Made Easy. Now, if I'm quite honest, she annoys the shit out of me. I have a really hard time believing she really eats and enjoys all those cakes she makes when she looks like a bloody super model. Give me Nigella any day - can I help it if I'm reassured by the sight of a love handle and a borderline double chin? Its just not natural for super models with gappy teeth and crisp white shirts to tell me how to make a Victoria Sandwich. Does not compute. So anyway, rant over, Lorraine (bless her, I've been a bit harsh) made a lovely pizza. In fact, so lovely a pizza that despite the fact that I don't really like pizza, I've been thinking about it all day.

So here we are - Proscuiotto, Mozzarella & Fig Pizza. I've adapted the original recipe slightly, but you can find that here.

Ingredients for Basic Dough:
- 250g of Strong White Flour
- 1 Tsp of table salt
- 0.5 Tsp of dried yeast
- A gulg of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 125ml of warm water

Ingredients for Topping:
- About half a large tube of tomato puree
- Packet of Procuitto ham
- Two blobs/packets (?) of mozzarella
- 3 figs, quartered
- Olive Oil
- Seasoning

Mix the flour, yeast and salt together in a mixing bowl. In a measuring jug, mix 125ml of warm water (just from the tap is fine) with a big glug of olive oil. Make a well in the middle of the flour mix and pour in the water/oil, mixing quickly.
Knead the dough for about 10 minutes by hand on a floured surface. If you have a food processor it'll take around half the time. Shape into a ball and cover with cling film. Leave to rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 220C. Roll the dough out to around 30cms wide, in whichever shape you like! Once evenly rolled, prick with a fork all over. This stops the dough from puffing up to much and gives you a crispier base.
On to the base, spread the tomato puree on with the back of a spoon or, if you're fancy, a palette knife. Be as liberal as you want with this stuff. I think it has the power to drown other flavours out so I tend to be quite light handed with the red stuff. Make sure your mozzarella is properly drained (otherwise your pizza will be swimming in water) and roughly rip the two blobs into smaller pieces and place them over the pizza.

Roll the proscuitto ham into little roses (balls, essentially) and place in the gaps between the cheese. Cut your figs into quarters and spread them evenly over your other toppings. Sprinkle with salt - not too much because the ham is already quite salty - and grind some black pepper over the top to your taste. Drizzle some olive oil over the top and place in the oven.

Allow to cook for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the base is a golden brown colour. Then remove from the oven and bloody DIG IN! I must say, I'm not the biggest fan of mixing sweet with savoury and I'm not a big fruit fan either. I'm not sure I'd even tasted a fig before today. However, I do encourage you to have a go at this because the squishy, sweetness of the figs is balanced by the saltiness of the ham, and cut through by the acidity of the tomato. I found the whole experience pretty therapeutic and delightful, I must say.
I ate half this pizza, and was very satisfied. Lorraine's recipe says it serves 4, though I'd be inclined to query that, though perhaps I just didn't roll my crust thin enough. I'd say this much is more suited for 2 hungry monkeys or 3 skinny minnies.
How did you spend your saturday? Do you like Lorraine Pascale & "Baking Made Easy"? How do you feel about mixing your sweets with your savouries?

I love the Baking made easy show - she's marvellous. My mam made some of the flapjack she made on one of the first shows - and gosh was it so yummy. I'm also considering using the celebration cake she made the other week as my wedding cake but without the red dye inside. Your pizza looks so yummy!

I do enjoy miss pascale and her show :) its good to see baking done 'in person' - but the recipes I have followed so far for cakes have always been from nigella. so im a bit torn! I did see her do this pizza, the idea of figs worried me a bit :( I think id like it just with the mozarella and ham! im so narrow minded, i knowww :p haha.great catch up miss, you are looking lovely as always. teach me how to tie a turban/headscarf properly? i am hopeless :( yours is fab! xx

COMPLETELY agree with you about Lorraine Pascale - I find it hilarious when she puts a cake in the oven and it cuts to a short of her with 'serious intelligent glasses' on, doing some serious business work on her laptop or serious phonecalls. When I make cakes, I sit in front of the oven waiting for it to rise. That's real life. That said, beautiful pizza! Waitrose shopping is the perfect antidote to a tough dayx

I love watching Lorraine Pascal! I've now been ordered to make purple macaroons for my brother's engagement party in a few weeks! I've never eaten a fig in my life so I plan on making that pizza this week, sans figs!xxMxx
