Insomnia: I Can't Get No Sleep

I'm sitting here at 1am, maybe for the 5th night in a row, unable to sleep. I've never been a good sleeper. I wake up easily and have to wear ear plugs - living in a house with 5 other vivacious and outspoken ladies is sometimes problematic! But I'm interested to know - what do you guys do to cure insomnia?

I know what I've been told in the past, the sensible options: get a hot mug of cocoa and read a book til you get sleepy, but sometimes this doesn't work, and I'm sure you'll agree, its not always the most appealing option.
I often find myself catching up on Bloglovin, trawling Tumblr or We Heart It or tweeting to no one. I've been known to burn through a dvd boxset too, I devoured all 7 dense seasons of The West Wing over a three month period last summer. At the moment I'm fixated with Criminal Minds (I've become quite embarrassingly obsessed - to a giggly school girl level - with a certain Dr Spencer Reid), though I guess watching countless episodes about FBI agents tracking down America's most gruesome and twisted murderers could be a hinderance to my sleep in itself...

I often find myself returning to old movie favourites too. The Graduate is a great one, Annie Hall is another I return to over and over. A few years ago, when I was getting over an operation and spent months in bed, I used to watch High School Musical when I couldn't sleep at night and felt a little upset with the world. Why? Because it brings me intense joy and reminds me that dreams can come true. Mock me all you like. Nowadays I often jump to 500 Days of Summer, and find I usually get sleepy around the IKEA scene. IKEA always has the power to exhaust me.

I recently read that experts say that you should turn your laptop off a whopping 2 whole hours before you attempt to fall into REM, I think I can speak for most bloggers when I say that this is an unrealistic goal. On the days when I'm being good, I turn my laptop off around an hour before I turn my lamp off - take my make-up off, moisturise, put my pjs on and relax into one of the many paperbacks I have to read for my course that week, but life doesn't always run this smoothly! I have to admit that I often fall asleep while watching something on my laptop, only to wake an hour or so after, groggy and annoyed, or send my macbook to sleep minutes before I try to nod off myself, producing vivid dreams and unrestful sleep. Having your brain trick you into thinking you're in Inception every night, only minus the hotness of Leo and Tom Hardy is not so great, so I pledge to take steps to improve myself!

Something I've also had to start doing is relaxation techniques and meditation. Yes, kind of like a "You're walking along a beach, you can see the ocean. Can you hear the waves?" type situation. I'm always skeptical of this type of "hippy shit" as I'm inclined to call it, but I'm learning to open my mind a little bit, and its doing me some good I think. I've also practiced a similar thing as a writing technique in some classes of my degree! I've often had to do exercises where I close my eyes and go on a "journey" to try to become part of that alternate reality - in writing it goes under the guise of "Visualisation" and its never been a technique that I've particularly warmed to, but I know plenty of writers who do use it and get a lot of creative help from it, along side relaxation.

Other things to consider are the things we consume in the hours before bed. I have a dreadful Diet Coke habit, which I've been trying to ween myself off. I have a friend who has to drink decaffinated tea all the time because of what the caffiene does to her - goodness knows what she'd be like after a Relentless! The effect that I've seen in her caused me to have a think about what caffiene must do to our bodies, so for the evening hours, if I'm in, I try my hardest to only drink squash, water or decaf or herbal tea. I've found that a camomile tea really chills me out before bed.

Below are some of the things that help me to sleep better. Lovely PJs (these ones come via the gorgeous Victoria's Secret), candles, eye masks, ear plugs, an ipod, favourite films, tea, a book and in times of serious trouble Rescue Remedy do a night spray which I find sometimes helps. Click on the link below to trace all these items.

What kind of sleeper are you? How do you cope with sleeping troubles? Have you ever suffered from unusally vivid dreams or nightmares?

I'm off to try and catch some Zzzzzzs.

I'm in the same boat! I literally have no idea how to get to sleep sometimes. Like you, I end up getting through whole seasons of tv shows - sometimes I don't even particularly like them, like 90210! When I was younger my mum got me herbal sleeping pills - I'm pretty sure they work through placebo effect, but just knowing that the placebo effect works induces it in itself. I think they were called Kalms, and they're not too expensive so I'd give them a try. The only reason I don't still use them is because I'm taking a year off college and work so I don't mind my sleeping pattern being messed up. xx

I used to think I was a life-long insomniac until I tried swapping my normal tea for deacaf tea in the afternoons and it made a huge difference. Perhaps you could try decaf diet coke?

I can't get enough sleep, I get early nights and wake up yet but I must have a HUGE sleep debt as I'm always so tired... If I can't sleep I always just have a hot bath and potter around doing little jobs until I'm tired and at least it means I have been slightly productive :P Maria xxxP.S. No worries about the chat yesterday, you know where I am if you ever want/need to talk :) xxx

I like to do things like tidy up my make up drawer and put the ironing away before I go to sleep. I find that that helps. I also get in to bed and turn the light off, put the lamp on a listen to a bit of Janice Long on radio 2, unwind a bit. I bought blackout blinds recently, best money I've ever spent. I don't wake up until my alarm goes off.Hope you get a good night sleep soon xx

Hi Lil,I'm the same! Absolutely the same! I absolutely CANNOT get to sleep at nights; it's been a struggle my whole life (parents have horror stories of hyper toddler up ALL NIGHT), and since I've started college it's only gotten worse. My lovely, sensible, yet very frustrating doctor is v. unwilling to start me on any sleeping aids, so for years I've been trying the following:- cutting out caffeine past midday- going to bed at the same time each night- earplugs- blackout blinds-hot water bottles- not using laptop or phone an hour before bed (this one is the one I slipped up on most frequently!)- listening to quiet, folky music (Laura Marling has a very gentle voice)-listening to classical music- listening to alienesque instrumental, orchestral music (Múm, Sigur Rós, Efterklang, Aphex Twin and the likes)- drinking warm milk- drinking chamomile tea (decaf, of course)- herbal sleep remedies (the over the counter sort)- reading for pleasure- reading work for college- lying in total darkness- having a night lampSo far, not so good. All I can really do is rearrange my lectures so that I have a few free hours in the morning or in the late afternoon, which is when my body usually will relent and let me snatch a catnap.Sigh, life. I'm so sleepy.
